Do you fear the dark & twisty?

Yes, this is the taboo that no one wants to talk about, but I wager is on everyone’s mind. It certainly was on mine when I started.

What if I discover something really devastating beneath the surface? Or, maybe you know it’s real and you just don’t want to go there?

If you truly want to break through whatever is holding you back, you MUST go there.

But, when you write from your gentle and loving heart, it has only your best interests at heart and will only tell you what you can handle in that moment.

 

SHADOW FEELINGS

I know I dwell on the shadow feelings that come up when we journal. I dwell on it a lot.

I have to, because I AM DRIVEN TO NORMALIZE THAT WE ALL HAVE DARK FEELINGS. I want to make it okay for YOU to acknowledge to yourself, and to the world, that no amount of television, potato chips, inspirational quotes, wine, is going to stop the dark feelings from coming back the moment you stop watching TV, overeating, posting, drinking…

The only way to end the darkness is to turn the light on.

Stop trying to cover up the stink! Instead uncover it and let the light purify it. Then, let it go.

It will always be there, but remember that your shadowy bits are part of you too. They are there to remind you that you are human. It’s okay. When you stop trying to cage your anger and hurt, and let it fly — safely, on the pages of your journal — you are giving wing to hope and light and beauty.

There is finally room to climb out of your Fear Box and begin to create the life you want.

 

FEAR IS BLOCKING YOUR LIGHT

Who will I be if not who I am now? 
What will I have to give up when I get there? 
What if my life isn’t better? 
Will I be able to bear the light of people looking at me?

If you really want to break through, you have to make a commitment to yourself. You must be willing to look under the rug, overturn the rocks that strewn along your path — see what you’ve been avoiding. Because you know what? It’s probably not nearly as bad as you think it is. Yes, the light might be a little harsh, yes you may have to make some changes, check your temper, stop nagging, be aware when your belly says, “enough,” listen when your heart says, “Do it.”

Because you are enough.

Because each tiny step you make is a step towards the life you’ve been dreaming about. It is within your reach if you let go what you’ve been clutching to so tightly.

Open your arms to all that awaits.

Start with opening up your journal, listening to what your heart is asking of you, and making a plan. Not a resolution. A plan. Make 2017 the year of loving yourself. Your year of caring enough about yourself to start working through the stuff you’ve been avoiding.

There’s no time like the present.

 

THE GENTLE SPIRAL, WHERE WORDS FLOW AND ANSWERS COME

I’ve always loved the shape of the spiral and how it takes it’s time getting to the centre. We start at the top, chattering away at ourselves, clearing away the words so that we can get through clutter to truth.

Asking, “What do I mean by…?” helps.

The slope is gentle, the spiral is wide. Soon we connect to our hearts, to the voice of knowing inside of us and we begin to hear questions that lead us deeper. We may feel a bit of fear, but we know we are getting somewhere, so we keep going. The slope is still gentle but the spiral turns are more pronounced. We’re on a path that is leading us inexorably to the core of our fear or answers.

You can take as much time as you like, in as many journal writing practices as you need.

Just keep the pen moving.

 

TURN THE PRISM

Instead of choosing to see the anger, hurt, and sadness, turning the prism is about choosing to see the phoenix rising up out of the ashes. You are not a victim.

You are not broken. YOU ARE A TRIUMPH!

When you turned that prism and recognize that you are a brilliant diamond, with facets that you are eager to display, you are ready to shine your beauty, your fire, your essence.

Yes, yes, I’ve heard all the excuses… I only write on the computer, my hand gets all cramped when I write, no one writes by hand any more, I can’t read my own handwriting — and that’s just what they are my darling — excuses!

Writing From the Heart journaling is different. There are so many good reasons to give it a try:

  • When you write by hand, you almost immediately slow down our brain because you can only really focus on one thing at a time
  • Writing by hand helps engage your creativity, memory, and deeper thoughts because it is rhythmic
  • You’ll enter the state of FLOW more easily because you slow down your brain to alpha state (in which you are aware, yet in deep concentration, as in meditation)
  • It’s easier to write in your journal when you connect your HEART to your BRAIN to your PEN. You simply become the recorder of thoughts rather than a writer
  • You’ll shut down your inner critic because you’ll be focused on listening, not grammar or whether or not what you’re writing sounds good

 

THINK OF JOURNAL WRITING AS CLEANING OUT THE PIPES

It’s a brain dump of all the mess and crap and love and joy you experience. You never have to worry about perfecting a Writing From the Heart practice because you can always use it to learn more about yourself. Resist the urge to correct your grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. It's meant to be raw and unpolished. It is a reflection of where you were in the moment you wrote it.

Get the gunk out so you can move onto the good stuff! And if there’s something there, you can always go back and rewrite and develop it more completely.

 

MAKE IT A WRITING MEDITATION — DO IT REGULARLY

When you write by hand you are flexing your listening muscle. If you do it every day (or regularly), it could become as important as your daily exercise regime or eating well. Consider journal writing a part of your spiritual practice. A writing meditation. Think of how wonderful it will be to reach a state of calm and contented emptiness.

 

GET THE HANG OF IT, THEN CHOOSE WHETHER TO WRITE WITH A PEN

You always have the choice. All I ask is that you give it a try my way first. Write with a pen on paper, and see where it takes you.

When you are able to reach that all important state of meditative FLOW where listening to your heart comes easily, you can switch to your computer if you want to. Make your writing practice your own. As long as you can go deep, and get out what you need to say, do it. Writing in a way you’re comfortable with is the most important thing to me.

NEVER RUN OUT OF THINGS TO SAY AGAIN!

Never run out of things to say again

 

One of the most common things I hear about journal writing is, “I open my journal, then stare at the blank page because I don’t know what to say.”

But when you write from your heart, you’ll find this rarely, if ever, happens to me.

 

WRITING FROM THE HEART IS NOT ABOUT BEING A GOOD WRITER. IT’S ABOUT BEING A GOOD LISTENER.

Yes, that’s right, it’s more about listening and writing down what you hear than being a good writer. Your heart has infinite wisdom and will never run out of things to say. All you have to do is take notes.

Sometimes you may not be able to connect to your heart right away, but just write down whatever you’re hearing run through your head and within minutes you’ll shift gears into writing from your heart.

And if you don't stop, breathe, calm yourself, and listen again. OR, just keep writing, "I don't know what to say. I don't know what to say. I don't know what to say." until you hear something else. Or write whatever you hear. Sometimes, like it the days of the old carburetors, you have to clean out the crud that stuck in your pipes before the good stuff starts flowing again.

Do any of these sound like you?

You lash out if you feel the slightest criticism, and then feel like the most horrible person ever.

You try desperately not to cry because you don’t want anyone to think you’re a weak-ass crybaby who is a vulnerable target.

You feel like you’re bad to the bone and undeserving, so you keep people at a distance in case they hurt you, or you hurt them.

There is a scientific reason why journaling using Writing From the Heart happens. You hear your heart when you reach the alpha brainwave state known as FLOW. Like meditation, FLOW leads to a relaxed but awake state in which we are at our most receptive and creative. We hear the wisdom of our heart speak because everything around us slows down. The more times you write your difficult stories down in your journal, the weaker the spell they have over you, gets.
