FOLLOW THE SPIRAL THROUGH FEAR

Walk the spiral path with your pen

In my last post, I wrote about using a pen to walk the labyrinth and move through fear (follow the link to get the free labyrinth pen walking kit). I also mentioned using the spiral to gradually work your way into the core of your fear. However, some of the less than uplifting terms for spiraling (downward spiral, spiraling out of control, tornado, and twister) didn’t feel good to me.

However, I’ve used the spiral image several times now in my own journaling and I’ve been very impressed with how deep the spiral took me. When I write in the spiral, I always seem to invoke the help of guides and angels, and sometimes even my higher self, so perhaps that’s what’s making it extra effective.

The spiral represents the path leading from outer consciousness (materialism, external awareness, ego, outward perception) to the inner soul (enlightenment, unseen essence, nirvana, cosmic awareness). —  from Spiral Meaning and Symbolism

WHY FOLLOWING THE PATH OF THE SPIRAL WILL HELP YOU BUST THROUGH YOUR FEARS

One of the loveliest things about Writing From the Heart is that it’s not really about writing, it’s about quieting your mind enough to hear what your heart needs to tell you. Unlike your inner critic, your heart is gentle and loving. It will never give you more than you can handle. You can trust it.

But, you may not believe me, and that’s where the spiral comes in.

If you look at the spiral from the side, it becomes like a funnel. At the top end, you meander along at a slow and steady pace, working your way around the fear that is at the very core of the spiral. The decline isn’t scary because it stays consistent. Before you know it, your turns are getting shorter and sharper as you get closer to the fear. But, by this time, I have seen again and again, as students come closer to the centre, the faster they write, because they know they are getting closer to the answer and their excitement builds. It simply doesn’t feel threatening or scary because the clues are falling into place like puzzle pieces.

This is also what Writing From the Heart feels like, but the process seems to be much faster for me when I use the spiral.

USE THE SPIRAL TO QUIET YOUR MIND AND HEAR THE VOICE OF KNOWING

Like the labyrinth, when following the path of the spiral, we have to concentrate to stay on course. The lines are curved and we turn the paper around and around, which creates a hypnotic effect that creates “flow”. Flow is the state where your alpha brainwaves take over and although we are conscious, we are also intensely concentrating at the task at hand. Our brain can only focus on hearing The Voice and our pens can only concentrate on forming the words we are hearing that create the path to the core of our fear. This is the flow state that meditators, musicians, writers, gardeners, model builders, artists — and journalers find ourselves — before we know it, two hours have passed and we’ve written pages and pages. We could keep going, but our hands are cramped and we need to stretch. That is flow…

WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE CORE, SPIRAL UP TO ENLIGHTENMENT

Spiraling Up

Is it just me and my “tie it up with a pretty bow” self that finds myself on the edge of a breakthrough each time I reach the centre of the spiral or labyrinth? In a labyrinth, we are made to retrace our steps with new eyes, taking it in and creating understanding.

In the spiral, I come to the centre and face my fear, but I may not yet have the answer.

But, the beautiful thing about this pen walking journey is that the line of the spiral is two-sided. After taking a short pause to sit with the fear or the problem I am looking for answers to, I simply pick up the pen and head back to the outer edges of the spiral. The answers come almost immediately and the rest of the journey to the ever widening opening is a process of understanding and discovering what I need to do to let the fear subside. Sometimes I’ve even let it go by the time I’m out of the spiral again.

Rather than thinking of this journey as spiraling down to the core of our fears, we can think of it as ascending through fear and continuing upward to enlightenment.
